Battle Against Bugs
Over the course of the last few weeks, a series of drug resistant bugs have been identified - the third and most current (Elizabethkingia meningoseptica) being a rare bacteria found present in ICU. Due to her prolonged stay, and low immunity, Nuru has unfortunately been subjected to these infections present in healthcare facilities.
Post Cardiac Arrest
After the cardiac arrest, Nuru was taken off of sedation and was given the chance to regain consciousness on her own. As of today she’s slowly started waking up and the doctors gave her an MRI to measure the extent of the damage sustained while her brain was deprived of oxygen
Cardiac Arrest
On Wednesday morning, Nuru Mugambi had 2 cardiac arrests, they were able to successfully resuscitate her
HDU to ICU
The doctor’s noticed that Nuru was using a lot of her energy to breathe and they wanted her to be more comfortable so they made the decision that intubation would be the best course of action for her
After she was intubated, she was sedated and overnight she was transferred to the ICU and was put on restricted visitation in order to limit the amount of disease she is exposed to
Notifying Friends & Family
When visiting the hospital, Nuru’s daughter, Lailah Makena, was informed by the doctors that “if any friends or family wanted to see Nuru, now would be the best time.”
Nuru started informing more of her friends as well her the rest of her family about her condition and her situation.
Back To HDU
Within 24 hours of Nuru being moved to the private ward, she was brought back to the HDU
Her lungs had a puncture in them and there was liquid filling up, making it hard for her to breathe on her own. She was put on an oxygen mask, which was operating at 100%, meaning if her ability to breathe dropped, the machine wouldn’t be able to compensate and she would have to be intubated.
The Turn Around
After 2 weeks in HDU, the doctors told Nuru that she was stepping down from urgent care and would be able to return to the private wards
Her kidney function was picking up and the doctors were sure that she was in the clear and now needed to just recover in the Private wards
One Week Later
Nuru is now going on two weeks in hospital, within the past two weeks she had gotten COVID as well as pneumonia.
The pneumonia caused clots in both her lungs and her colon which then triggered poisoning of her system and overwhelmed her lungs
She was assigned specialists covering lupus, rheumatology, blood, kidneys, infectious diseases and respiratory. Over the past week, she had 3 dialysis treatments and 3 plasma treatments, She was moved to the HDU as the dialysis machine is not available in the private wards
The Admission
Nuru Mugambi was admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital on August 5th at 6 am. She went to the hospital around 3am as something did not feel right. The doctors said they would like to admit her for the day, and slowly the time grew.
